Job Description
Systems & Software, a division of Harris, is seeking a Software Engineer to join a small Agile Development team. In this role, you will be responsible for new feature implementation, troubleshooting bug fixes, handling new quotes, and supporting complex technical systems. You will play an important role in designing, building, testing, and deploying products. You will collaborate with team members to support current product lines and contribute to the future of the product, with access to the latest tools, hardware, and experienced software engineers. Our engineers utilize AI coding tools daily, and we have developed internal tooling around them to assist with a codebase spanning decades of technology. We expect AI-assisted code to meet the same standards as any other code, requiring understanding and the ability to defend it during reviews. This remote position is open to candidates across Canada and the US. Travel is required occasionally (1-2 times per year) for purposes such as visiting Vermont, customer sites, or the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Candidates must possess a valid passport and be eligible for international travel, including visa exemptions or necessary visas for entry into Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- B.S. in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems or equivalent work experience
- 2+ years experience working with some or all of the following technologies: Front End technologies (Angular, React, one of many JavaScript libraries, JSP) Core Technologies (Java, Python, Procedural SQL, SOA & MVC Architecture, Micro Focus COBOL)
- Proven experience with Oracle and PL/SQL or MS SQL Server and Transact-SQL
- Experience with Web Services (REST, SOAP)
- Hands-on experience writing automated tests with frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito, Jasmine/Karma, Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium
- Comfort working with AI coding assistants (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar) and sound judgment about verifying and reviewing their output
- Ability to design and develop well-structured, custom application software following such principles as object-oriented design and service-oriented architecture
- Possess an excellent work ethic, high level of initiative, aptitude, and energy in order to succeed in a fast-paced environment
- Has excellent interpersonal skills and effectively communicates well with both internal and external resources
- Has mindset and desire to embrace learning, working well within a team or unsupervised
- Must hold a current, valid passport and be legally eligible to travel internationally. This includes either passport based visa exemption or possession of any required travel visas for entry into Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with billing and/or accounting applications
- Knowledge of the public utility sector
- Proven Unix/Linux knowledge/background
- Experience working directly with clients and Third-Party vendors on system integrations
- Having effectively worked with all levels of management
- Experience with cloud-based architectures
