Software Engineer

MeritFirst is building the infrastructure to make objective, efficient ways for people to demonstrate critical thinking, problem-solving, adaptability, and execution the default for hiring. We create systems that allow companies to hire based on demonstrated ability rather than pedigree alone. This role involves working directly with the founder, product team, candidates, and employers to shape and build the MeritFirst platform, including the candidate experience, assessment engine, employer workflows, evaluation systems, and underlying infrastructure. The position requires engineers to determine what should exist, break down ambiguous problems, ship initial versions, observe real-world behavior, and iterate quickly. Engineers will leverage AI to build a system that is understood, explainable, testable, and trustworthy, with deep technical foundations and the use of modern tools to multiply judgment. The responsibilities include building the core product, creating flexible assessment platforms, owning problems end-to-end, transforming human workflows into software, building trustworthy evaluation systems, closing the learning loop, using AI effectively with appropriate guardrails, making trust a technical requirement (reliability, security, privacy, accessibility, candidate experience), strengthening the technical foundation, and setting the engineering standard.
