Job Description
This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Austin, TX or Warren, MI, three times per week. The Senior Software Engineer will design and develop backend services, APIs, integrations, and event-driven solutions that support digital commerce and order-management workflows. They will build reliable and maintainable software using appropriate design patterns, testing practices, security controls, and coding standards. The role involves integrating services with platforms such as Shopify, IBM Order Management System, subscription and billing systems, fulfillment services, and other internal or external partners. Responsibilities include participating in technical design reviews, troubleshooting application and integration issues, taking ownership of DevOps practices, and building production operational capabilities. The engineer will deploy, configure, and troubleshoot containerized workloads using Azure and Kubernetes, and participate in on-call support activities. Collaboration with DevOps and SRE partners on cloud architecture, infrastructure automation, monitoring, security, scalability, and operational improvements is expected. Strong AI skills and AI-assisted development practices are to be applied to improve productivity, code quality, test coverage, documentation, automation, and troubleshooting. The role also involves providing technical guidance and mentorship to less-experienced engineers, participating in hiring activities, and communicating technical status to stakeholders. Contribution to engineering standards, reusable components, documentation, and continuous improvement within the Digital eCommerce organization is also part of the role.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Five or more years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- Strong hands-on experience developing backend applications, microservices, APIs, and integrations.
- Proficiency in at least one backend programming language such as Java, Python, Node.js, or a comparable language.
- Strong experience designing and consuming REST and GraphQL APIs, including API security, versioning, documentation, and performance considerations.
- Experience with data modeling, asynchronous processing, event-driven architectures, and service-to-service integrations.
- Experience with relational or NoSQL databases and a practical understanding of data persistence, performance, consistency, and resiliency.
- Experience writing automated unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end tests.
- Strong experience with Git-based development, pull requests, code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and release management.
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure services and cloud-native application development.
- Strong experience with Docker and Kubernetes, including deploying, configuring, scaling, monitoring, and troubleshooting workloads.
- Experience with infrastructure as code, configuration management, environment promotion, secrets management, and automated operational processes.
- Experience with observability tools such as Datadog or comparable platforms, including logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, alerts, and incident troubleshooting.
- Strong experience using AI coding assistants, AI-based automation, or AI-enabled developer productivity tools, with an understanding of responsible and secure AI adoption.
- Ability to read logs, interpret metrics, investigate incidents, and troubleshoot issues in development and production environments.
- Strong communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and ownership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in eCommerce, digital commerce, order management, fulfillment, subscriptions, billing, customer entitlement, or related domains.
- Experience integrating Shopify or another commercial eCommerce platform with enterprise backend systems.
- Experience with Kafka, Azure Event Hubs, or comparable event-streaming technologies.
- Experience with Drools or another business rules engine.
- Experience with Spring Boot, Node.js, Python, or similar backend frameworks.
- Experience with Azure cloud services and Azure-native application patterns.
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, or similar cloud and infrastructure tools.
- Experience configuring dashboards, alerts, logs, traces, or monitors using Datadog or a comparable observability platform.
- Experience contributing to automated deployment, rollback, infrastructure automation, or environment-management processes.
- Familiarity with secure software development, secrets management, API security, and common application vulnerabilities.
- Experience with subscription commerce, vehicle services, digital activation, or customer-facing transactional systems.
- Experience using AI coding assistants, AI-based automation, or AI-enabled developer productivity tools in a responsible and secure manner.
